Flat rate vs reducing rate
With a flat rate, the rate applies to the whole financed amount for the whole term, even after you've paid part of it. With a reducing rate, it applies only to what's still owed, so the cost falls with each payment. That's why 4% flat costs more than 4% reducing. Before comparing two offers, put them on the same basis; the calculator shows the reducing equivalent of a flat rate.
A 100,000 car, 10,000 down, 90,000 financed over 60 months at 4% flat: profit = 90,000 × 4% × 5 = 18,000; payment = (90,000 + 18,000) ÷ 60 = 1,800 a month.
Example
Example: what is 4% flat as a reducing rate?
In the example above, the payment is 1,800 a month for 90,000 financed over 60 months at 4% flat. To get the same payment on a reducing basis, the rate would be about 7.4% a year. So “4%” flat costs you roughly what 7.4% reducing does. That second number is the one to compare offers with.
| Monthly payment | Total profit or interest | |
|---|---|---|
| 20% flat | 10,500 | 224,000 |
| 20% reducing | ≈ 8,521 | ≈ 129,000 |
Same headline rate, a gap of about 95,000 in total. Always ask: is the rate flat or reducing?
What's a balloon payment, and when is it a bad idea?
A balloon is a large sum pushed to the end of the loan, which lowers the monthly payment. But you'll need the full amount in the last month, or refinance it at a new cost. Ask yourself: will I have this money in 5 years?
Car finance in Saudi Arabia and Egypt: what differs?
The maths is the same, but offers are written differently in each country. Watch these points when comparing:
In Saudi Arabia
- Many offers are murabaha with a flat profit rate, so ask for the reducing equivalent
- Balloon payments are common in lease-to-own offers; they only lower the monthly figure
- Comprehensive insurance is sometimes inside the payment, so compare payments with insurance, not without
- Ask whether a salary transfer is required, and what early settlement costs
In Egypt
- Offers state the interest as flat or reducing, and many are flat; convert before you compare
- The required down payment varies a lot between offers, and between new and used cars
- Watch for admin fees, car insurance and life insurance if required
- Work out the payment together with fuel or CNG and service before deciding

The payment isn't the whole cost of the car
Before choosing the payment you can afford, add what you'll spend each month to run the car. A car with a lower payment and higher consumption can cost you more overall.
Fuel: monthly distance × consumption × price per litre
Service and tyres: spread over the months
Insurance and renewals: the yearly amount ÷ 12
Parking, washes and fines
Before you sign
- Ask for the rate both ways: flat and its reducing equivalent
- Know the total you’ll pay, not just the monthly
- Is comprehensive insurance included, or paid yearly?
- What are the admin fees?
- What are the early-settlement terms?
- Add fuel and maintenance: work out the full cost of ownership

Financing cars for your company?
When you finance several cars, the payment is part of each car's cost per km. Add the instalment as a monthly expense for each car in Sayarti+ Business: it shows in the cost-by-car report, so you can see which cars cover their cost and which don't. Work out each car's full cost in the fleet cost-per-km calculator.
FAQ
FAQ
How do I calculate a car's monthly payment?
On a flat rate: subtract the down payment from the price, add the profit (amount × rate × years), subtract any balloon, then divide by the number of months.
Is this calculator from a bank or lender?
No. Sayarti+ doesn't offer finance and isn't partnered with any bank. Results are for comparison; the lender gives the final offer.
Why is my real payment different?
The lender may add insurance or fees, or round the rate differently. Enter insurance and fees in the options to get closer.
What's the best loan term?
A longer term lowers the payment but raises the total you pay. Compare 36, 48 and 60 months and pick a payment you can afford without stretching the loan for no reason.
How do I know how many payments are left?
Divide what’s still owed by the monthly payment and round up, or use the “Payments left” tab above.
Can I pay the loan off early?
That depends on your contract. In Sayarti+ you can log a larger or one-off payment and the balance drops at once.
How big is the difference between flat and reducing in total?
At the same headline rate, flat always costs more because it's charged on the full amount for the whole term. In our 48-month example the gap was about 95,000.
Should I include insurance in the payment?
Yes, if it isn't already included. Enter it as yearly insurance to see your true monthly cost.
Can I track loans on several cars in the app?
Yes. In Personal you add a loan per car for free, and in Sayarti+ Business the instalment shows in each car's cost.
